Optical observations of GRB afterglows : GRB 970508 and GRB 980326 revisited ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆
Since January 1997, we have monitored 15 GRB fields, detecting 6 optical/IR afterglows. We have revisited GRB 970508 and GRB 980326. For GRB 970508, we derive a power-law decay exponent α =-1.19 (R-band). The luminosity of the host galaxy L relative to the characteristic luminosity L ⋆ is in the range 0.06–0.15, i.e. a dwarf galaxy. For GRB 980326, we derive a power-law decay exponent α =-1.7, ...
متن کاملGrb Afterglows from Anisotropic Jets
Some progenitor models of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) (e.g., collapsars) may produce anisotropic jets in which the energy per unit solid angle is a power-law function of the angle (∝ θ −k). We calculate light curves and spectra for GRB afterglows when such jets expand either in the interstellar medium or in the wind medium. In particular, we take into account two kinds of wind: one (n ∝ r −3/2) pos...
متن کاملInteraction Models for GRB Afterglows
We review interaction models for GRB afterglows, with an eye on constraining the nature of their progenitors and the geometry of explosion. Evidence is presented for two types of progenitors. The radio afterglow of GRB 980425/SN 1998bw and the multi-frequency observations of GRB 970508 can be fitted by a blast wave expanding into a wind-type medium, pointing to a massive star progenitor. The br...
متن کاملRadio Observations of GRB Afterglows
Since 1997 the afterglow of γ-ray bursting sources (GRBs) has occasionally been detected in the radio, as well in other wavelengths bands. In particular, the interesting and unusual γ-ray burst GRB980425, thought to be related to the radio supernova SN1998bw, is a possible link between the two classes of objects. Analyzing the extensive radio emission data available for SN1998bw, one can descri...
متن کاملCosmology studies with GRB afterglows
GRB afterglows close to their peak intensity are among the brightest sources in the sky. We discuss how GRB optical-to-X-ray afterglows can be used as probes of the metal enrichment of the interstellar matter in the GRB host galaxies and of the heating history of the intergalactic matter in filaments and outskirts of clusters of galaxies along the line of sight. The key points of the proposed o...
